Tide Pool “Run”

June 13th, 2010 | Leave a comment

A great idea- because we are lucky enough to have a super low minus tide on a weekend, Nancy invited us to run from her house to Capitola and then along the beach to the Cement Ship. It’s maybe 4-6 miles, not too long!

We started at 6am and already we were comfortable in short sleeves, whoo it’s going to be hot today! Once on the beach the lure of the tide pools sang their siren song, and we discarded the idea of running, happily poking around at the sea anemones, crabs and sea glass. (Nancy very literally was poking sea anenomes who said:  hey! Quit it!)

We liked the rocks embedded with shells. How long does it take for that to form? On the cliffs there are distinct striations of shells with several feel of rock between them. What year did that happen, and how many years between the stripes?

At New Brighton Beach (roughly in the middle) we picked up our running pace a little as the tide pools were left behind and a nice, open sandy beach guided us to the ship. Lots of seals and seabirds out this morning, hello!

The return trip had more actual running in it, although we did stop to pick up pretty pieces of glass along the way. And we found a round little ball of moss on the beach. I named him “Henry”, and we placed him on the cliff, near a waterfall, then ran/walked back to Nancy’s house via the riverfront.

My bike ride home was almost as pleasant as our tide pool adventure had been, hooray!
